The Best Isekai Anime Ever Made, Ranked for 2026

Updated on August 8, 2026, by Mark Sammut: Now that the Summer season is more than a month old, I can recommend a few isekai anime. Rather than just highlighting 2 or 3, I just ranked all the shows currently airing.

Love or hate them, you cannot deny isekai anime‘s popularity. Nowadays, the genre produces roughly 30 shows per year, many of which rank as the most popular of their respective seasons. Re:Zero, TenSura, Overlord, and KonoSuba are just a few milestone releases that transcend the isekai bubble, and they showcase just how different otherworldly adventures can be.

With roughly a million shows available, newcomers looking to try out the best isekai anime might not know where to start or what to avoid. While I don’t plan to answer the latter, this list aims to provide a curated selection of the greatest must-watch series in what may be the most divisive genre in anime history.

Best Summer 2026 Isekai Anime (Ranked)

As the Summer 2026 anime season stretches on, we can now make an informed decision on which of its shows are actually worth prioritizing. As always, the lineup includes quite a few isekai anime, including both returning heavyweights and new names. For the most part, the overall quality is all over the place, with a couple of great shows surrounded by a sea of mediocrity.

Let’s go through all the isekai anime of Summer 2026, with a quick ranking. This isn’t so much “you need to watch” but rather “you might want to watch.”

1. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 – Unsurprisingly, Mushoku Tensei is shaping up to be the best isekai anime of Summer 2026, especially since Re:Zero has yet to continue. At this point, most people should know what to expect from the show and Rudy, so season 3 will not change their minds. However, viewers who kind of lost interest during season 2 might want to give the sequel a chance, as Eris’s return has certainly been a positive.
2. Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2 – After way, way too long, Saga of Tanya the Evil finally made its long-awaited return, and season 2 doesn’t really change the formula from its predecessor or the movie. The anime still emphasizes tactical warfare, psychological battles, and dark humor, all the while escalating the conflict. The animation is great, Tanya is evil, and the isekai gods are smiling.
3. Hanaori-san Still Wants to Fight in the Next Life – Let’s shake things up by switching to a reverse isekai, and a hilarious one at that. In their previous lives, Ryusei was the demon king who was killed by the hero Meteor; in their current lives, the former is the latter’s teacher, and they have a weird but funny dynamic. Your mileage will vary entirely on whether you love or hate Hanaori, as her loud style of humor might not be to everyone’s tastes. Personally, I find her annoying in just the right way.
4. Heroine? Saint? No, I’m an All-Works Maid (And Proud of It)! – What can I say, I like my comedies. Heroine? delivers a genius premise: Melody reincarnates as the saint of an otome game… that she has never played or even knows exists. Completely ignoring her purpose, she becomes a maid, albeit one who is absurdly overpowered. A cozy parody that pokes fun at isekai tropes in a lighthearted and loving way, Heroine? is perfectly cute.
5. Hell Mode: The Hardcore Gamer Dominates in Another World with Garbage Balancing Season 2 – One of the more surprising delights of 2026, Hell Mode continues its upward momentum by entering an academy arc. While the story has picked up pace, the anime is still all about that tactical gamer mindset. Nothing amazing but enjoyable.
6. Skeleton Knight in Another World 2 – We are getting into the “mediocre” part of the list, and Skeleton Knight season 2 is shaping up to be among the more disappointing isekai anime of the season. For the most part, the sequel feels like a repeat, just with worse animation and far less gore or violence. There’s nothing terrible about the episodes, and Arc continues to be a fun protagonist, but the anime seems happy to be a reliable 6/10.
7. Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs 2 – Sticking with disappointment, Trapped in a Dating Sim season 2 is such a step back from its predecessor, production-wise. Season 1 wasn’t even much of a looker, but the character designs and art style were consistent; season 2’s animation is fine, but the art direction is all over the place and distracting. The writing is OK, as is the humor.
8. The Exiled Heavy Knight Knows How to Game the System – Kudos to GoHands, The Exiled Heavy Knight Knows How to Game the System isn’t the worst isekai anime of Summer 2026, although that isn’t saying a lot. Still, if you enjoy an OP fantasy about a protagonist who world-breaks his way to success, this series should hit the mark. Just prepare for some “stylized” visuals.
9. The Forsaken Saintess and her Foodie Roadtrip in Another World – Honestly, I really wanted this one to be better, as I love a good slow life anime. Sadly, the show just doesn’t have that much going for it, and the animation is fairly underwhelming as well. Still, we don’t get many camping anime, and this one handles that element fine.
10. From Overshadowed to Overpowered: Second Reincarnation of a Talentless Sage – Technically, this is a time travel story, but the protagonist was originally isekai’d into the world. It’s fine. Just another OP MC power fantasy.

As isekai anime have a habit of playing it too safe, so a show willing to take risks should be commended. However, just because something is different does not automatically make it good, and Ishura does not leave a great first impression. In a world with many Visitors and other superpowered entities, city-destroying conflicts are always on the horizon, especially since the True Demon King’s death left a power vacuum.

Ishura is structured unusually not only for an isekai but for anime in general. Rather than focusing on a single character, the show dedicates the first five episodes to introducing different OP archetypes, giving each about 10 minutes. As these stories are only loosely connected, the first half of season one is confusing and hard to follow. However, things come together nicely in the second half, when all these characters clash in a war between two empires.

Although not devoid of world-building or political intrigue, Ishura‘s selling point is its fights that pit overpowered characters against each other, and its roster is diverse and absurd. Season 2 is a bit more focused than its predecessor, but it mostly exists for the same reason.

.hack//Sign

A True Classic Of The Genre

.hack//Sign

While far from the first to tackle the concept, .hack is generally regarded as the ancestor of video game-focused isekai anime like Sword Art Online. However, most anime are not part of the genre, as they usually do not center on characters trapped in a game. The main exception is .hack//Sign, the first anime set within this universe.

At its core, this story is about Tsukasa, a boy trapped in the virtual world of an MMO. While this premise might conjure up memories of dozens of subsequent shows, .hack/Sign has a wildly different tone than most of its successors. Moving at a purposefully slow pace, this isekai anime is surprisingly contemplative and mysterious, opting to ask challenging questions rather than provide satisfying answers. The result is a polarizing show that is ambitious but not necessarily all that entertaining.

A gate to a fantasy world appears in Japan, causing an all-out war to break out between the invading Empire and the JSDF. The latter manages to repel the opposing forces and, in the battle’s aftermath, decides to send a group of soldiers into this new world. One member of that party is Itami, an otaku who eventually befriends a trio of girls who slot into fantasy archetypes.

GATE is an entertaining anime that tells both a standard and reverse isekai story. Itami is nothing more than a decent protagonist, but he is aided by a massive roster of secondary characters. His harem is filled with lovable personalities, and they make the show what it is. Admittedly, GATE‘s reputation has been hurt by the fact that it is pretty blatant JSDF propaganda, and your mileage may vary. Still, it is cool to see modern military equipment taking on fantasy tropes.

So I’m a Spider, So What?

Best Spider In Anime

Hey, not everyone gets to reincarnate as a powerful human with ties to nobility. Some folks must draw the short straw, and Kumoko gets the worst of it when she starts a new life as a spider. Yes, the poor girl is just an ordinary monster, albeit one with a pretty high power ceiling. Focusing on dungeon crawling, Kumoko sets out to become her best spider-self, all the while making a few notable friends along the way.

So I’m a Spider, So What? is a show of two halves. Whenever Kumoko takes center stage, the anime is fun, light-hearted, and even quite epic. She is an awesome MC and carries the show on her back. Unfortunately, the series is pretty evenly divided between Kumoko and the human characters (some of whom were also isekai’d), and the latter’s storylines and scenes are nowhere near as captivating.

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

The Most Influential And Beloved Villainess Isekai Anime

While it might not seem that obvious at a glance, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! is one of the most important isekai anime of all time. Similar to the light novel medium, this project helped propel villainess stories into the mainstream, triggering a new era of dominance that is still going strong years later. Nowadays, nearly every season seems to include one show featuring a woman reincarnated as an otome game’s female baddie, and My Next Life as a Villainess got the ball rolling in a big way.

Due to the influx of similar series, Catarina’s journey might not seem all that special nowadays. Like many influential anime, My Next Life as a Villainess is the prototype of this subgenre, setting the basics that many of its successors follow. After regaining her memories of a past life and realizing she is a villain who will die sooner rather than later, Catarina sets out to rewrite her destiny, a process she accomplishes through her irresistible charm and positive attitude. She enjoys a bit of romance, develops a harem, and even gets to occasionally show off some cool magic.

My Next Life as a Villainess is just fun, and a lot of that comes down to Catarina. She is just relentlessly endearing, and she has to genuinely work to protect herself during the first season. The sequel is not quite as good since it lacks any real tension, but it is still decent.

The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic

One Of The Best Mentor-Student Dynamics In The Isekai Space

Out of Winter 2024’s many isekai anime, The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic has been the biggest surprise. The show follows Ken Usato, who is summoned to another world alongside two classmates. While the latter were picked as hero candidates by their summoning kingdom, Ken was just an accident, although he proves to be a valuable ally as he is capable of using healing magic. Before long, Ken finds himself under the tutelage of Rose, a terrifying leader who plans to whip her new student into a soldier.

The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic is a show of two halves. The first couple of episodes lean heavily into comedy, and they are consistently funny thanks to Rose’s intimidating demeanor and Ken’s hilarious reactions. As the season has progressed, the humor has subsided in favor of drama courtesy of a pending war with demons, which is now in full swing. Although arguably better as a comedy, The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic works quite well as an action drama, even if the animation could be slightly better.

King From Now On!

A Mostly Forgotten Cult Classic

King From Now On! starts with its protagonist, the unassuming Yuri Shibuya, having his head flushed down the toilet, an ordeal that teleports him to another universe. Before long, he finds himself crowned as Demon King, a role that puts him right in the middle of the demon world’s strained relationship with humans. This bizarre start reflects the rest of the show’s direction, as Kyou kara Maou! often blurs the line between silly high jinks and dramatic intensity.

King From Now On! is a relatively old show that has somewhat slipped from the public consciousness since its original run. While by no means perfect, this 2000s isekai anime is generally decent, mainly thanks to characters like Wolfram and, yes, Yuri. The show does have some pacing issues and can get a bit formulaic at times, but it is worth a watch.

Reincarnated as a Sword

The Best Father-Daughter Dynamic In Isekai

At this point, isekai has seemingly done everything, at least when it comes to picking strange things for the protagonist to reincarnate as. Vending machine? Sure. Goblin? Of course. Hot springs? Why not! Most of these stories are duller than they sound since they often do not make the most of their unique circumstances, instead opting to take the audience on a fairly traditional journey. However, they can still be fun, and Reincarnated as a Sword is arguably the best “reborn as an inanimate object” isekai anime. Yes, that is an odd subgenre, but it has a couple of representatives.

A human wakes up as a sword in a fantasy world, and he fairly quickly realizes that he is quite powerful. However, every blade needs a wielder, and the protagonist finds his better half in Fran, a beastman who has led a difficult life so far. Reincarnated as a Sword‘s brilliance lies in the father-daughter dynamic that develops between these two, which grows naturally and believably throughout season 1. The anime blends action, comedy, and quiet moments surprisingly well, creating one of the better-rounded shows in the genre.

The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash

Unexpectedly Gorgeous Anime With An Easy-To-Love Main Character

A bit of a slow-burn success story, The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash takes a short while to fully find its feet and tone. Initially, the anime can be a touch overwhelming, with the first episode introducing Ivy (the protagonist), the concept of skills that determine people’s worth, and the very subtle isekai element. Rather than start with the whole reincarnation process, Weakest Tamer has an MC who is guided by a voice born from their past life, and they are not directly heard either.

Due to getting a zero-star rating as a tamer, Ivy is seen as deadweight by her village, to the point of being marked for death. She goes on the run and tries to survive in the wild, while gradually making connections with other villages and towns. Despite this fairly dark premise, Weakest Tamer is mostly a cute and relaxing slow-life story, one driven by a lovable and endearing protagonist. Also, the animation is shockingly good, way better than most isekai anime.

Grimgar: Ashes And Illusions

Too Short, But A Gripping “Realistic” Take On Isekai

On the surface, Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions seems like any other game-themed isekai anime: teenagers wake up in a strange world constructed on MMO tropes and they must get by. The thing that separates Grimgar from most other shows is that while the world might pull from MMOs, it is not governed by their rules. Minor threats in other anime can be deadly in Grimgar, and death is not something that can just be waved off.

Grimgar moves at quite a lethargic pace, focusing more on establishing its quite big cast of characters as it (harshly) eases them into its world. Unfortunately, the anime only scratches the surface of the source material, ending after just 12 episodes. While still worth watching, the show is little more than a sample of the light novel.
