Although The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now available to watch at home, it’s also still in theaters, and it continues to rake in money.
The animated film has now earned more than $980 million globally, which puts it ahead of A Minecraft Movie ($960 million) to become the No. 2 highest-grossing video game movie of all time. The current chart-topper is 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.36 billion).
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and A Minecraft Movie have very closely related results for the domestic and international markets. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earned $424.5 million from the domestic market, which is just ahead of A Minecraft Movie’s domestic total of $424 million. Internationally, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has made $555.8 million, compared to $536.3 million for A Minecraft Movie.
The global totals for each film are $980,383,830 for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and $960,387,780 for A Minecraft Movie. In terms of budgets, A Minecraft Movie was estimated to have cost $150 million to produce, compared with $110 million for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Again, these are estimates, and they do not include marketing expenses, which were no doubt significant for both.
Unsurprisingly, more installments in both franchises are expected. A Minecraft Movie 2 is set for release in 2027, while Toad actor Keegan-Michael Key recently said the next Nintendo movie could land in 2029, which is a date that Bowser actor Jack Black also mentioned for the next Nintendo movie. Officially, however, Nintendo has not announced another animated movie. A live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, meanwhile, is lined up for release in April 2027.
Outside of Nintendo and Minecraft, the next video game movie this year is Weapons director Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie this September. That will be followed by a Street Fighter movie in October.
Mortal Kombat 2, meanwhile, was released in May and made $119 million worldwide so far.
