After a standout run at the box office, Pixar’s latest animated film is now streaming on Disney Plus.
Toy Story 5 opened in theaters on June 19, overcoming potential sequel fatigue as it went on to gross over a billion dollars worldwide. Thus far, it has brought in more than $1.1 billion on a $250 million budget, making it the highest-grossing movie in the series’ history and the third-highest-grossing film of the year (after Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey).
While there was some understandable skepticism about Pixar releasing yet another Toy Story film, especially after Toy Story 4 seemed to wrap up many story arcs, the latest installment once again charmed critics and audiences. The film has a 93% critics’ score and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews praising its animation, performances, and humor. While Pixar’s output has been up and down in recent years, it still seems to bring its A-game for the series that put the studio on the map.
When is Toy Story 5 streaming on Disney Plus?
Toy Story 5 officially came to Disney Plus on Sept. 23. Pixar’s latest first became available to rent or buy digitally on Prime Video, Apple TV, and other services on Aug. 18. The roughly three-month gap between theatrical debut and Disney Plus release seems to be the new standard for Disney, with this year’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu coming to the platform after a similar wait (that movie hit theaters on May 22 and landed on Disney Plus on Sept. 2).
The most frustrating news around Toy Story 5 is that even though the film made over a billion, Disney laid off employees at Pixar shortly after its release. Between 100 and 150 members of its 1,100-person staff were let go on July 21, the biggest layoffs since May 2024 when the company laid off about 14% of its staff, or 175 people.
According to a report from The Wrap, the layoffs were blamed on the “underperformance” of Pixar’s Hoppers, even though the movie potentially broke even by grossing $389.7 million on a $150 million budget — the typical napkin math is that a film needs to gross more than double its production budget to break even, but specifics vary.
Pixar’s next film is Gatto, and it stars Mark Ruffalo as a stray cat living in Venice, Italy. It’s set for release on March 5, 2027. Other upcoming pictures from the studio include Incredibles 3 in 2028 and Coco 2 in 2029.
