The Naruto series is a brilliant shonen anime that presents a diverse set of villains from beginning to end. From the vengeful missing-nin or rogue shinobi to the powerful members of the Akatsuki and the Otsutsuki Clan, all these Naruto villains played a crucial role in immortalizing Masashi Kishimoto’s legendary manga.
Naruto: The 29 Best Villains, Ranked
From rogue ninjas to terrorists, and even alien beings, the best villains in Naruto are in a league of their own.
Among these villains, Orochimaru of Konohagakure traumatized an entire generation of Naruto fans for all the disturbing acts he did throughout the series. Even Boruto’s Amado Sanzu and his scientific body modifications don’t compare to Orochimaru’s twisted work, making him the most disturbing villain of the entire Narutoverse to this day.
Naruto’s Most Unsettling Villain Is Still Orochimaru
Orochimaru’s Darkest Acts in Naruto
For most of Naruto, Orochimaru’s life revolved around his twisted experiments to achieve his goal of learning the world’s secrets, on top of seeking an immortal body that would enable him to gain knowledge of all techniques, be it ninjutsu, taijutsu, genjutsu, and more. In other words, Orochimaru simply wants to live long enough to try out every jutsu in existence and see how far human evolution can be pushed with his experiments.
However, Orochimaru’s experiments were far from ordinary. Nearly all of them break ethical boundaries in the shinobi world, involving countless innocent children, prisoners, and even fellow shinobi to unlock the hidden secrets about human genetics and cloning and to further understand their biological composition. Worse, he did not feel any remorse for sacrificing these people, convinced that they are an unavoidable cost of progress.
On top of that, Orochimaru even messed around with the God of Shinobi’s DNA, implanting Hashirama’s cells to recreate his Wood Release. At the cost of the lives of many shinobi, only one viable subject ultimately emerged from his experiments. These twisted experiments would continue with Kabuto Yakushi’s support, pushing Orochimaru’s research even further into forbidden territory.

Orochimaru’s Hatred for Konoha Runs Deepest
Orochimaru’s Attempts to Destroy Konoha
Once a pride of Konoha, Orochimaru detested the Leaf Village for casting him out and abandoning his brilliance. He was a prodigy, once a strong candidate for the position of Fourth Hokage, but he was beyond anyone’s help. His obsession with transcending human limits, combined with his sadistic nature, ends up destroying his brilliant reputation in the Leaf Village.
While Orochimaru’s experimentation allowed him to learn about Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation and Living Corpse Reincarnation and even develop Cursed Seals, he used these techniques to antagonize Konoha for most of the story. He even joined the Akatsuki organization at some point, in an attempt to acquire Itachi Uchiha’s body, including his powerful dojutsu, the Sharingan, though his arrogance became his downfall.
As the plot unfolds, Orochimaru never stops looking back at Konoha, as his hatred pushes him to destroy the village he once called home. As a result, Orochimaru assassinated the Third Hokage and later set his sights on Sasuke Uchiha in an attempt to steal his youthful body and visual prowess.
Orochimaru Is Still the Most Unhinged Scientist in Naruto
Orochimaru’s Crimes Outclass Amado Sanzu’s Work
Just like Orochimaru, Amado Sanzu was established as a mad scientist in Boruto. It’s almost as if Amado became Orochimaru’s replacement, now that the latter has changed his life. Working with Jigen AKA Isshiki Otsutsuki, Amado also messed around with children to acquire a perfect vessel for Isshiki. Countless children died in the process, leaving Kawaki and Code as the only surviving subjects.
Moreover, Amado also experimented with someone’s cells, specifically Shibai Otsutsuki’s, implanting them on humans he modified with scientific tools. Most of his experiments became successful, with many of the inner members of Kara awakening Shibai’s shinjutsu. However, his unethical experiments involving his deceased daughter continue to drive him to a dark place.
The best medicines always taste bitter.—Orochimaru
Despite everything, Amado Sanzu’s disturbing experiments are still inferior to those of Orochimaru’s. His long history of forbidden research, body manipulation, and inhumane testing that treats human beings like guinea pigs sets a far greater precedent for scientific horror in the series. That’s not all, as Orochimaru was a treacherous villain with a god complex who would use anyone and betray even his closest allies if it served his pursuit of immortality and knowledge.
