A remake of Star Fox 64 is coming to Switch 2 this June, and it’s packed with Nintendo Switch 2-specific features.

After his unexpected and much-discussed debut in THe Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Fox ‘Star FOc’ McCloud also gets to appear in his own brand new Switch 2 game. Announced tonight during a very unexpected Nintendo Direct, we got our first look at the title, which is simply called Star Fox. It is based on the Nintendo 64 title, Star Fox 64, but with completely overhauled visuals and new character designs, too. Plenty of new cutscenes have been added, specifically in the form of pre-mission briefings to give us more context about the characters and the world.

The game launches on 25th June, 2026.

The Nintendo Direct jumped straight from an introduction to the game to a trailer showing off the pretty lush new visuals; showing Star Fox and pals flying in formation in their four ships before the game switches to the game in action. Stage layouts are the same as Starfox 64, but everything looks… well, like a Switch 2 game.

You can see the trailer below.

There is a multiplayer element to the game, where Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf will battle it out for aeiral supremacy over three maps. Players will need to retrieve cargo, collect items, or take each other on in dogfights. You can play with Game Share, letting one person invite up to three others either locally or online via Game Chat. You can use the Switch 2’s mouse to target, and share JoyCon to have one player target whilst the other pilots (good luck with that). So whilst this is a remake of Star Fox 64, it seems Nintendo really has gone all-out with the Switch 2-specific bells and whistles.

Another cool feature is that using Game Chat in Star Fox will let you map one of the character avatar’s faces onto your own; you will appear as one of the pilots in the chat window, with the avatar matching your facial expressions and mouth movements. Star Fox V-Tubers, anyone?

This comes just after Nintendo announced a dedicated Star Fox Direct, just a few minutes before the presentation actually went live. “In just a moment, at 11pm (UK time), we will livestream Star Fox Direct – 06/05/2026,” Nintnedo said on social media, with credits to chief designer Shigeru Miyamoto.

We only recently heard that a new Starfox was reportedly in the works, so chalk this one up to another plus in the column for renowned leaker NateTheHate.

If you’re keen for more Starfox or Starfox-adjacent action, series veteran Giles Goddard has been working on a stylish spiritual successor called Wild Blue that he’s confident fans of Nintendo’s franchise will enjoy.
