After years of waiting, Mega Mewtwo’s Pokémon Go debut has finally been announced, and Go Fest Global is free for all players

Mega Mewtwo X and Y will debut in Pokémon Go during Go Fest 2026, the game’s annual celebration. Developer Scopey has also confirmed Go Fest 2026: Global will be free for all players this year on 11th and 12th July. This includes access to the Special Research quest and coveted increased shiny Pokémon spawns bonus.

The arrival of Mega Mewtwo is one players have been eagerly awaiting ever since Mega Evolution was released back in 2020. After all, the only thing better than Mewtwo is a stronger version of Mewtwo. Hopes were raised in 2021 when Mega Mewtwo X was spotted in the key art released for the game’s fifth anniversary, only for nothing to happen at all. Mega Mewtwo news went very quiet until January of this year when the assets for Mega Mewtwo X and Y were pushed. Both Mega Mewtwos being released as part of Go Fest really shouldn’t come as a surprise – it is the game’s tenth anniversary – but it’s always nice to be proven right.

The sheer power of Mega Mewtwo X and Y means they’ll only appear in Super Mega Raids during Go Fest Global. These ‘creatively’ named raids require a large number of players due to how powerful the Mega Evolved raid bosses are. Success earns the chance to catch a normal Mewtwo and offers either Mega Energy X or Mega Energy Y depending on the Mega Mewtwo you faced.

That’s right! Unlike Mega Charizard, which also has two Mega Evolutions, Mewtwo will require two different types of Mega Energy. While this change won’t affect Mega Charizard, the change to Mega Levels will. From the release of Mega Mewtwo, Mega Levels will be tracked individually for Pokémon with Mega Evolutions. The good news is that any progress you’ve made before this update will be carried over. Why the change? That’s most likely to increase the number of raids players partake in.

If you’re attending one of the in-person Go Fest events in either Tokyo (Japan), Chicago (USA) or Copenhagen (Denmark), you’ll get the chance to obtain a Mega Mewtwo earlier thanks to a Timed Research quest. Though you’ll have to pick between Mewtwo X or Y… (Personally I’d go with Mewtwo X. It just looks cooler.) The end of each park session will also feature a special Mega Mewtwo Super Mega Raid where over a 1,000 players can take on the Pokémon together.
