One of the most well-hidden secrets in Gothic 1 Remake is the possibility of getting a Scavenger Mount. To get this friendly two-legged beast as a transport will also unlock a faster travel method, even before players learn how to teleport later in the game. So, acquiring the Scavenger Mount is a must if you want to survive longer in the Colony.
This guide will cover all the required steps to get a mount in Gothic 1 Remake, including the best method to complete this quest faster without a hitch.

How To Unlock Mount & Ride Skill in Gothic 1 Remake
Having a Mount in Gothic 1 Remake is the best way to Travel Faster around the Colony. To unlock the Mount, players will need to find a specific NPC named Cohsel, but he is well hidden. Before even starting to look for the Scavenger Mount, it is extremely important to gather the following items:
- 5 Kingstide Algae (purple glowing algae that grows in lakes and rivers. Players need to dive to find it).
- 3 Wolf Pelts (can be bought from traders or obtained after acquiring Hunting Skills from Drax).
- 3 Leather Straps (can be bought from traders).

Make sure you have everything ready, then follow these steps to find your own Mount in Gothic 1 Remake:
Travel to the North Gate (the one where you first access the Old Camp), then turn to the left, following the path until it reaches a crossroad. Turn to the right at the crossroads.
Go down the curve, then keep following the trail until you pass a house on the right side, then keep following the path until you see a small hill and a broken log on the right side of the road.
Turn left and climb the hill to find a hunting shack with a Scavenger in a stable, and a tamed Wolf named Dandy resting on the floor.
Here’s the specific point in the map where players need to go (red marker). If you are not in this precise spot, then try to follow the road until you reach this zone.
Talk to Cohsel, and after exhausting all dialogue options, players will be able to ask for a Scavenger Mount for themselves. This will trigger the Beak Performance quest, and the completion reward is, of course, access to the Mount and Ride Skill.
Cohsel will reject them, but keep insisting until he finally gives up and asks for the items mentioned before. First, he will ask for the 5 Kingstide. Once you deliver them, he will ask for the Wolf Pelts and the Leather Straps for the Mount.
Now, all players need to do is wait for a full day (in-game time) to let Cohsel work. After a day, return to Cohsel’s shack and ask if the Scavenger is ready.
With this, the Beak Performance quest will be over, and players will receive a Scavenger Whistle and learn the Riding Skill. Equip this item in the hot bar to call your Scavenger Mount. This only works while in the open map.
The Scavenger Mount cannot be ridden inside Cities (Camps) or Caves, but it will be extremely useful to move faster between locations.
As a matter of fact, this is the only way to Travel Fast before unlocking the Teleporting Runes (which require Magic Training and come much later during the story).
Plus, the Scavenger Mount can be petted, so that’s a big plus for those who love to have animal companions in classic RPGs. Players can climb and get down from their Mounts by pressing (F). It accelerates by holding Shift.
You cannot fight while riding the Scavenger Mount. Make sure to steer away from enemies as much as possible, since you and the mount could be killed.
