Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Is Making Pawns Matter More as Its Open World Gets More Vertical

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is right around the corner, and it’s expanding the base game in a massive way with its new Norgan region. Norgan is an icy, harsh northern location that is being teased as a challenging, but fascinating, new area to explore. A fresh map area to explore in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen could mark a new era for the game, and what’s even more intriguing is that Norgan will also bring some changes to Pawns. Most map expansions just add more surface area to the game. Norgan is subverting expectations, though, by focusing on verticality over horizontal design, meaning that a player’s Pawns have to respond accordingly.

Pawns in Dragon’s Dogma 2 can be frustrating. It’s not uncommon to find discussion online about how Pawns seem “dumb” because of their tendency to get stuck on obstacles and wander off, but the Dark Arisen expansion might actually make them feel more capable and useful this time around. There are a lot of promising features coming in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, but what the devs have revealed about how Norgan will influence Pawn behavior is something that a lot of players might want to pay attention to, especially those who have found these companions to be more frustrating than helpful.

Norgan’s Verticality Finally Gives Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Pawns More Meaning in the Dark Arisen Expansion

GosuGamers got the opportunity to talk with game producer Naoto Oyama and director Kento Kinoshita about what inspired the team when crafting Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen‘s Norgan. When brainstorming about what features the Dark Arisen expansion needed to include, both Oyama and Kinoshita were aware that adding a new region to Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s map would be the best place to start. Since a lot of open-world expansions bring new areas to the base game, it’s not much of a surprise that the dev team used that as a starting point.

However, it is a pleasant surprise that how Pawns reacted to the new area was considered when bringing Norgan to life. Post-launch content can often add new features and areas without being concerned about how companions and NPCs will react to it, which makes the Dark Arisen expansion that much more intriguing. Because of Norgan’s vertical design, Pawns will be running into obstacles and terrain that they never have before, and the dev team in charge of Dark Arisen wanted to make sure that companions reacted with meaning instead of just getting in a player’s way.

We intentionally wanted to make a more vertical experience for the Norgan map.

A Sneak Peek at How Pawns Respond to Norgan’s Vertical World Design

Because of the verticality, entrances to Dragon’s Dogma 2 dungeons and caves will often be found above the player character, making the entrance harder to access. Players will either be able to use the environment to help assist their character, utilize Dark Arisen’s new Hook Rope tool, or have Pawns lift players up into the dungeon. So, even though players will have more than one way to traverse Norgan’s new terrain, Pawns can actually be used as effective helpers.

This may sound like a small update to how Pawns behave in Dragon’s Dogma 2, but it’s an effective way to not only make these companions more useful, but to also make Norgan feel even more believable. Dragon’s Dogma 2 may have had its hiccups since launch, but it’s still one of the best open-world RPGs for exploration to come out in the past five years. Norgan will hopefully add to that great sense of exploration, and having Pawns that are reactive to the environment will only make the icy region that much more immersive in the long run.

Beyond Pawns, Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Teases a More Satisfying Experience Across the Board

Dragon’s Dogma 2 has been a diamond in the rough since its 2024 launch, and Dark Arisen feels like the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 moment that many fans have been waiting for. Granted, Dark Arisen isn’t on the same massive scale that Cyberpunk 2077‘s 2.0 update was, but the expansion is still making enough changes and tweaks that Dragon’s Dogma 2 could feel quite different in the next few days.

This may sound like a small update to how Pawns behave in Dragon’s Dogma 2, but it’s an effective way to not only make these companions more useful, but also to make Norgan feel even more believable.

Other Confirmed Changes Coming With Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen

  • Norgan also features a new campaign that takes around 15-20 to complete.
  • A wolf companion named Freki will be introduced.
  • Players will meet Eir, a mysterious woman who will join the party to assist in navigating Norgan’s unforgiving terrain.
  • Updated features like more robust character customization and quality of life improvements
  • Added features like the 12 Lost Rites dungeons that can be found across the map and a new fast travel mechanic

Freki the wolf companion and Eir are going to breathe even more life into Norgan. Oyama and Kinoshita have also confirmed that Eir won’t take over a Pawn’s place in one’s party. Instead, she’ll be added as an additional party member, only joining during specific moments throughout the expansion’s story. Between these changes and Dark Arisen marking the first time that Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be playable on the Switch 2, the latter half of 2026 is shaping up to be a promising moment for Capcom’s open-world fantasy RPG.

Players have been anticipating an expansion for a while now. Dragon’s Dogma 2 DLC rumors popped up earlier this year, and now that the wait is almost finally over, it’s going to be interesting to see how both longtime players and newcomers respond to Dark Arisen’s content. Capcom could have easily written Dragon’s Dogma 2 off and let the game remain in its more divisive state, but it’s refreshing to see that the game is still being taken into consideration two years later. The Capcom hot streak has no signs of slowing down, and it will be pretty great if Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen adds to the company’s stellar 2026.
