Helldivers 2 Adding Game Changing Roguelite Mode Called Planet Warfronts

Game director Mikael Eriksson revealed the upcoming addition of Planet Warfront missions to Helldivers 2, adding a more dynamic and roguelite style mode for players to check out. Helldivers 2 has continued to change and evolve since it originally launched back in 2024, not only adding new enemy factions and variants, but giving players access to new environments, activities, and tools of destruction as well.

All of this has been in part to make the Helldivers 2 world feel alive and constantly changing. While things haven’t always been smooth, as Helldivers 2 battled through performance and technical issues in the latter half of 2025, things have since stabilized and allowed Arrowhead Game Studios to tease future content. In fact, a lengthy post has given players an even greater look at how Arrowhead plans to continue evolving the game in the near future.

Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead Game Studios addresses player concerns by answering hot button topics and reveals some plans for the near-term.

Helldivers 2 Reveals Planet Warfronts Missions

In a lengthy post to the community, Helldivers 2 game director Mikael Eriksson discussed near-term plans for the popular multiplayer game. Player and Community progression was a big element of the post, with Arrowhead seeking to make the Galactic War of Helldivers 2 feel more alive with players having a bigger impact on things. Later this month, Galactic War Campaigns is being added, an evolution of the current Major Orders system that lasts for 1–3 weeks and will better communicate how things are going and what’s at stake for the game’s world. Better yet, this system will offer more rewards than just medals if the conditions are met.

A little bit further down the road, Eriksson also revealed new missions called Planet Warfronts, a more dynamic style activity that takes inspiration from other roguelite-style games. Essentially, these missions are grouped into 3 possible categories: defending liberated territory, joining a Frontline War, or being stuck behind enemy lines. Players will be fighting to reach key strategic locations on the planets, such as cities, which can also have enemy variants on different parts of the planet to contend with. There will also be gameplay-altering effects, consequences for achieving liberation goals (such as a timer to reach a certain point), as well as the game master twisting certain elements during gameplay. Ultimately, the goal is to make each run feel fun and unique.

Experimenting with the game’s core system has seemingly always been at the forefront of the studio, with Eriksson admitting that dynamic warfronts is something they attempted to add even before the game launched. However, at that time, the team felt that there wasn’t enough content to draw on, so the plans were put on hold.

Along those same lines, Arrowhead CCO Johan Pilestedt has previously spoken about adding “sequel-level” ideas to Helldivers 2. While he has mentioned roguelite modes, to which this feature was born out of, Pilestedt also discussed other potential ideas such as larger and more open maps where players could encounter one another to combine and take on bigger challenges together.

Alternatively, another goal is to find a way to add bigger lobbies and expand team sizes, with 8 players being mentioned specifically. However, a sticking point with that has been more on the technical side, with a big concern being potential performance issues ultimately dragging down the experience. Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Jorjani initially rejected the Helldivers 2 idea when it was proposed by a fan, citing technical concerns and potential frame rate issues. However, the technical side of Helldivers 2 has improved over the past few months, so perhaps this is now more plausible than it was prior.
