A brand-new co-op horror game on Steam called Shift at Midnight was released on July 22, and has already received plenty of rave reviews from fans of the genre. The game had attracted a ton of attention before its official launch, making it one of the more anticipated co-op horror releases on Steam.
Shift at Midnight became a viral indie game on Steam after prominent content creators like CaseOh and Markiplier streamed its demo. Many compared it to horror genre staples like Five Nights at Freddy’s, as well as creative indie games from other genres, such as Papers, Please. At the same time, it was praised for its originality and nostalgic low-poly visuals, which many players believe enhance the horror experience.

In Shift at Midnight, up to three players start their shifts at a convenience store like a regular business management-style game. The catch is that they must keep the store running despite the constant dangers lurking around them. It is 1993 America, and the world is haunted by doppelgangers who disguise themselves as humans, or at least they try to. Players need to cross-examine every customer’s ID and inspect their appearance for subtle hints of a non-human nature. When doppelgangers are spotted, guns must be unholstered and the entities eliminated, or else things will quickly go south.

The setting and gameplay premise of Shift at Midnight are reminiscent of Stephen King’s novella The Mist. For those unfamiliar, The Mist follows a group of random supermarket customers who become trapped as unknown entities wait outside, ready to kill them. A similar feeling is recreated in Shift at Midnight. But, like many other friendslop games on Steam, its spooky setting also creates the perfect backdrop for incredibly hilarious moments.
Since its launch on July 22, Shift at Midnight has earned a 90% positive user rating on Steam. As of this writing, more than 800 players have reviewed the game, giving it a Very Positive badge that could soon be promoted to Overwhelmingly Positive. After all, Shift at Midnight‘s free Steam demo has already been reviewed by more than 8,000 players and currently holds the prestigious Overwhelmingly Positive rating.
From the looks of it, Shift at Midnight could be the next successful indie game on Steam from a solo dev. Developer Bun Muen is already working on a major free update set to be released in Q4 2026, which will add new content and fully release the currently beta version of Endless Mode.
