Zach Cregger is not one to take a break. Fresh off the success of Resident Evil, which may just be the best video game movie ever, the director is already hard at work on his next project: The Flood. The mysterious sci-fi thriller which Cregger will write, produce, and direct — has revealed its first major casting announcement.
As reported by Variety, Jennifer Lawrence will lead The Flood. Best known for her role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games (which she’ll reprise in this year’s Sunrise on the Reaping), Lawrence is an Oscar winner for 2012’s Silver Linings Playbook. Lawrence and Cregger don’t seem like that odd of a team, as the actress has appeared in movies like 2017’s Mother and 2025’s Die My Love, both of which lean into cinematic strangeness in different ways.
Cregger’s past projects have similarly featured some incredible acting talent. That’s especially the case in Weapons, which has a star-studded cast including Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, and Benedict Wong, among others. At this time, Lawrence is the only confirmed cast member for The Flood. “Jennifer is one of a kind, and I’m beyond excited to see her in this role,” Cregger said.
What we know about Zach Cregger’s The Flood
Not much has been shared about the story of The Flood so far, with Cregger keeping the project heavily under wraps. He did tell Men’s Health that it shares some similarities with 2001: A Space Odyssey and may revolve around human nature and artificial intelligence. That tracks with the description of the film as a sci-fi thriller.
We have a little more information about the film’s production team and release. The Flood will be released by Warner Bros., which previously released Cregger’s 2025 hit Weapons. Alongside Cregger, the film is being produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment. The film is set to be released on Aug. 11, 2028.
Beyond The Flood, Cregger currently has no other directorial projects lined up. A Weapons prequel titled Gladys is in production, also set for 2028, but Cregger won’t return as director. As for Resident Evil, the film has been a massive critical and commercial success. While there has been no official news, it’s hard to imagine Sony Pictures won’t pursue a sequel.
