‘Way Rather This Than the Oscars’ — Timothée Chalamet Reacts to Knicks Championship Win With Viral Jab at the Academy

A clip of Dune star Timothée Chalamet has gone viral after he celebrated the New York Knicks’ NBA Championship win by taking a shot at the Oscars.

New York City erupted last night when the Knicks ended a 53-year drought with their first total NBA victory since 1973. It was an explosive moment for basketball fans across town and in Hollywood, too, as the court was filled with celebrities that included everyone from Adam Sandler and Taylor Swift to Chalamet himself.

It was a 94 – 90 win against the San Antonio Spurs that was more than half a century in the making. However, as mayhem spread from the Frost Bank Center arena in San Antonio to the streets of New York City, it was the Marty Supreme actor who may have had the most infectious Knicks battle cry.

“Way rather this than the Oscars,” Chalamet said in the post-Game 5 clip. ” Come on, baby. The Knicks are champions, baby.”

Chalamet is currently parading around as a massive fan of the New York basketball team, but he’s definitely best known for his work as an actor. In addition to his work for the ongoing Dune trilogy, he’s most recently received praise for roles like Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, Kyle in Lady Bird, and Willy Wonka in Wonka.

Although he’s no doubt one of the most recognizable actors in Hollywood today, Chalamet has not managed to nab that coveted Oscar award quite yet. He notoriously walked away from the 98th Academy Awards earlier this year without any wins himself despite his Marty Supreme pic entering the competition with an impressive nine nominations.

Even if it sounds like the Academy is still on his mind as the Knicks take home a trophy of their own, he doesn’t seem too bitter about the ordeal. One video posted by ESPN saw the star celebrating with Finals MVP Jalen Brunsen and what looks to be Marty Supreme director Josh Safdie.

“THEY DID IT,” Chalamet said when posting another video taken from the Knicks’ locker room.

As Chalamet comes down from celebrating with the Knicks, it’s hard to say if he’ll be eligible for any categories at the 99th Academy Awards. In terms of his 2026 films, most fans are looking forward to seeing his take on an older Paul Atreides in Dune: Part 3.
